The Real True Story
(of Cinderella)

is a genderfluid musical theater experience that reimagines the most enduring Romantic tale of all time as a ground-breaking love story between two women.

THE REAL TRUE STORY (of Cinderella) began with a concert presentation at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater. Developmental work on the musical continued with a reading at Second Stage with a cast that included Sarah Stiles, Allison Case, Matt Doyle, Taylor Mac and Alison Fraser. MASS MoCA hosted a residency for the creative team and a company of eight dancers to devise a visual language based in movement and dance that confounds gender expectations. The project then received a developmental workshop at Pace New Musicals, followed by a recent 29-hour reading at the Vineyard Theater.

Some Real True history: THE REAL TRUE STORY (of Cinderella) is based on the non-musical CINDERELLA: The Real True Story (by Cheryl Moch),  which became an underground sensation when it was first produced in 1985 at New York’s lesbian collective theater, WOW. Directed by Lois Weaver with production design by Peggy Shaw, the production featured Lisa Kron as the King. CINDERELLA: The Real True Story went on to be published by Methuen, and has been widely produced, including two sold-out runs at London's Drill Hall.

The original London production of CINDERELLA: The Real True Story became fodder for the tabloids after a Tory in Parliament decried the play as “twisted and perverse” and unsuccessfully tried to have it banned.
